AMP RS-System
Product Description
This program covers the two-piece printed circuit board connectors and related mass termination cable connectors on 2.54 mm contact spacing for use in modular rack systems in digital electronic telephone switching systems.
The back-panel wiring for this modular system consists of either a multilayer or a double sided printed circuit board.
Male Contacts
In the back panel, male contacts with ACTION PIN are inserted. These pins provide a gas-tight interface without soldering because of its unique construction. When an ACTION PIN is inserted into a plated-through hole, two spring members are compressed. This compression during press-fit exerts force against the plated-through hole for a gas-tight connection.
First-Make-Last-Break (F.M.L.B.) applications are possible, to obtain an extended mating male contact. The male contacts can be inserted slightly deeper into the backpanel.
The wiring side of the male contacts provides 2 positions for wrapped connections in addition to the space for the cable connectors.
AMP ACTION PIN contacts provide high reliability and economy in panel packaging.
Male Housings
The ACTION PIN male contacts are held in position by mounting a male housing over the pc connector-side of the male contacts. The middle 6 contact-cavities in each row of the housing provide a force-fit to maintain the housing in position.
Compared to the usual Eurocard type connectors the housings have an increased "catching" area (four catching wings, larger entry-chamfers) and a central guiding, to provide proper alignment during simultaneous insertion of two female connectors in two male assemblies (double size daughtercard system).
Two different housing styles exist: one with polarization and another without polarization.
Male housings are available with either 3 x 32 signal cavities or with 3 x 14 signal cavities plus 6 cavities for power contacts.

Female Connectors
The shape of the female contacts prevents flux-foam or vapour from entering the contact zone.
The insertion depth of the female connector is 1.2 mm longer than the usual Eurocard type connectors to enable the use of standard length and First-Make-Last-Break male contacts.
Female connectors are available with either 3 x 2 signal contacts or 3 x 14 signal contacts plus 6 power cavities.
Power Contacts
Power contacts are screw-machined parts available in tin-lead or gold plating.
Male contacts have a M3 screw-thread to be fixed to power linking terminals.
Female contacts have a retention spring to be snap-locked into female housings.
Rear Header
The rear header is mounted over the wrap post of the male contacts to form a mating part for the cable connectors. Cable connectors are polarized by grooves in the rear header.
Locking Latch
A plastic latch to lock the cable connectors in the rear header.
Power Linking Terminals
Power terminals contain 6 or 8 ACTION PIN posts for insertion into the backpanel suitable for 30 A total.
The power linking terminal will be connected to the male power contacts by means of an M3 screw.
The power terminals will connected by means of one or two Positive Lock receptacles on wire.
Cable Connectors
Cable connectors are available in 2 x 2, 2 x 5, 2 x 10 and 2 x 32 positions. Covers are single piece snap-on parts except for the 2 x 32 position, which has two identical halves. Cable connectors are available for two different wire sizes, either 30-26 AWG or 26-22 AWG. The proven Tandem Spring Contact is being used as a receptacle contact. It contains a main spring supported by an anti-over-stress helper spring. The insulation displacement slots allow for fast and reliable application.
The Tandem Spring mass termination contacts are supplied preloaded in the cable connector housings. The snap-lock principle allows single contact-removal. Each contact has a metal strain relief/insulation support crimp.
