^ Brief Information
The province of Bangka Belitung (BABEL) Islands is the 31st Province in Indonesia, one of the newest provinces. Supported by the “Serumpun Sabalai” spirit and abundant natural resources, it has been expecting a greater role to speed up the island region’s development, namely Bangka regency, Belitung regency and Pangkalpinang city through cooperation development.
The geography location was quite advantageous for various economic sector developments, due to its strategic position within the economic growth triangle: Singapore-Johor-Riau and Batam region as well as Natuna Island. Considering its archipelago characteristics, the sea transportation has been the focus of development.
It is true that the sea transportation infrastructure is a requisite to support its economic activities, particularly accessibility among the islands. Besides, the government dedicatedly provides the accomplishment of other economic infrastructures such as building quays, developing new sea routes and cargo shipping availability. In addition, the government has been developing the landing area of its airport (Bandara Depati Amir) at Pangkal Pinang in order to serve Boeing 737 airplane.

The province of Bangka Belitung is located between 104°50’ - 109°30’ East Longitude and 0°50’ - 4°10’ South Latitude, with its total area of 81,724.54 km².
The administrative system comprises of 2 regencies and 1 city, namely Bangka regency, Belitung regency and Pangkalpinang City, of which, the biggest regency’s area is Bangka regency with 11,534.14 km² area, and the smallest is Pangkalpinang City, with 89.40 km² area. The heaviest rainfall is around 2,500 mm per annum with its average temperature between 25°C - 26°C.

GROSS REGIONAL DOMESTIC PRODUCTS
In 1999, Babel’s GRDP amounted Rp 4,647 billion. Manufacturing sector played the biggest role, accounted for 29.74%; followed by agriculture 22.15% and mining 15.02%.

EXPORT-IMPORT
In 2000, the export value recorded US$ 925.28 million, while its import value was US$ 245.53 million. Babel’s main export commodity consists of tin, pepper, rubber¸ processed wood products, fishery products and other mining products.
MINIMUM WAGE RATES
In 2000, the minimum regional wages was about Rp 300,000/month - Rp 1,000,000/month, depends on its business sector.
^ Natural Resources
AGRICULTURE
Babel’s primary agriculture commodities are among others: horticulture commodities such as corn, cassava, peanut and varieties of vegetables. Of the land available for rice field (wetlands), they have not been optimally exploited due to the preference of local people to plant pepper which gives higher sales value. This reflects to the availability of land area for rice field as many as 14,988 Ha of which about 3,609 Ha has just been cultivated.
PLANTATION
According to the business type, the development of plantation sector was divided into two groups, namely Local Community Plantation and big (private/state-owned plantation). The main commodities of Local Community Plantation are among others pepper, coconut, rubber, cocoa, and clove, while big plantations have their own commodities like palm oil which could produce CPO. The land available for this plantation sector is 559,454 Ha, and about 143,642 Ha (25.6%), was being cultivated.
FISHERIES
Due to its geographic location and surrounded by the sea, Babel has abundant maritime and fishery resources. The potency of MSY (Maximum Sustainable Yield) of fishery sectors is 213,625 ton per annum, while it has been exploited for 116,680 ton per annum (54.62%). The suitable land for fish hatchery is as wide as 114,665 Ha, and it has been utilized about 1,320 Ha. Besides, coastal areas are the ultimate business fields for see weed, shrimp, lobster, flying fish and many others.
MINING
Babel has abundant mining and mineral deposits or known as “World's tin belt”. The areas that have been exploited covered 486,445 Ha. Meanwhile, there are some potential resources of C-group minerals like: quartz sand, building construction sand, kaolin, granite, and diabas stone.

AGRICULTURE
Horticulture crops such as durian, duku, orange, pineapple, cempedak, banana and manggis.
Plantation. Besides the existing plantation namely pepper and palm oil, other potential resources of plantation are coconut, cocoa and cloves. The available areas for agriculture and plantation business are 559,454 Ha and it is only 143,642 Ha (25, 68%) benefited.
FISHERY
The sea fisheries resources is marked by the production amount of 213,625 ton/year and it is only 116,680 ton/year (54, 62%) benefited. Fishery sector resources consist of fresh water fish cultivation and sea water hatchery and cultivation including seaweed, sea cucumber, shrimp etc. To develop sea fisheries, the area of 183,000 Ha is provided in the regency of Bangka and 42,000 Ha is available in the regency of Belitung.
ANIMAL HUSBANDRY
Cow, pig, livestock, and goat.
MINING
Besides being the world major producer of tin, this province is also inherited by lots of mineral resources such as quartz sands with deposit of 252.5 million ton, 321.9 million ton building sand, 224.3 million ton Kaolin, 210.2 million m3 Granite and 89.9 billion ton diabas stone.
INDUSTRY
Marine industry such as shipping, processing industry of plantation products such as pepper with potential production of 61,558 ton/year and it is only 26,791 ton processed, CPO and coconut, processing of mining products such as ceramics, building materials, textile industries, electronics and rubber goods.
TOURISM
Eco-tourism and sea tourism of white sand coastal in the regency of Bangka and Belitung, recreation and entertainment parks, tourism supports such as hotel, restaurant, tourist transportation, etc, are among the best investment fields.
SEA TRANSPORTATION
Procurement of fishing ships, ocean vessels, and boats to connect Bangka Belitung to Batam, Singapore and Malaysia, are also welcome for investment.
